The NE-SME-IP was just launched last month with £0.7m to support SMEs doing innovative projects – there are details at

The main highlights are that the subsidy is a flat 40%, and that it is only for ‘established’ SMEs (meaning those that have been trading for at least 12 months).  The concept is that one “innovation specialist” acts as a sort of strategist / generalist / project manager, and brokers in various “innovation suppliers” to undertake specific tasks within the project.  Innoverce is registered both as an Innovation Specialist and as an Innovation Supplier.

It is administered by the BIC in Sunderland.  Their target is around 1 job created per £10k grant.

Apparently it can work alongside POC and other similar funding.
